Getting Girls Excited About Tech.
Begining in the mid 1980s, the number of women studying computer science and similar fields saw a steep decline. In 1984 girls accounted for 37%, while in 2011 they accounted for 17.6% of computer science undergraduates. In recent years that percentage has leveled off between 14% and 18%. Research by the University of Colorado has found less emphasis on developing girls’ computer science skills in secondary school, a lack of role models and the messaging in popular media as some of the key reasons. Our “Girls Only Camps” are designed based on insights from research on the engagement of Girls in technology programs and careers. We make computer science more approachable and exciting for girls.
Since 2015, we have been offering our Robotics and Coding programs, pro-bono, to Detroit area girls. We have done this through partnerships with the Michigan Sceince Center’s STEMinista project. In 2018, we started a partnership with the Detroit Public Library branches to go deeper into the Detroit neighborhoods that remain untouched by programs in downtown Detroit.
